I used to keep aquariums when I was in junior high. The important thing is to give them PLENTY of room, have a good filtrations system, don't overfeed them, and don't mix meek species with pugnacious ones.

That said, I don't like to see fish penned up either. The very least one can do is give them a good home.

I love Dr Z's comments! Witty, informative, intelligent. That's one dreamy ape....

I'd feel sorry for those fish in that tiny bowl too! But then, I don't even like to see animals caged in zoos, no matter how "realistic" their habitats.

dr. z We have a goldfish that was won at a carnival 4-1/2 years ago. We kept thinking "she" was lonely so we'd buy other fish. We found out that goldfish prefer to be alone. Even the snails used to leap (yes, actually) to their deaths out of the tank. Our fish has moved from bowl to 2 gallon tank, to five gallon tank to ten gallon tank.

She gets bigger everytime. Which leads me to wonder, if I put a goldfish in Lake Michigan and it managed not to get eaten shouldn't it become larger than a whale?

We also have a beta that was given to us as a 'thank you' gift. Some thanks. He lives in a two gallon vase with a plant on top. I feel sorry for him.

dguzman dr. z does know alot. Of course he has the distinct advantage of being from the future. And he's nice about it. If I went back 1,971 years all I would want to do would be to keep Saul of Tarsus on his ass. (troublemaker).

I heard that fish have a memory span of about a minute. (I did not learn this from 'Finding Nemo') So maybe even the boring old tank is fresh and new about every sixty seconds.

I felt like you about zoos until I read the life of Pi. Now I'm not sure what to think.

We used to have fish when I was a kid. Robogills was one of their names (my brother had just seen Robocop for the first time), but I can't remember the rest. Until Robogills died, of course, because I remember his replacement was called Robogills 2. I think we went up to about five or six, proving that our fish were not quite as impervious as their law enforcement namesake. Good times.

i love fish..... but i think they are fine in their confines.... if they were in lake michigan they wouldnt like the mercury, sludge and other assorted fun things corporate america dumps into its own private cess pools

I don't feel as sorry for fish as I do for my daughter's guinea pigs.
