Holy Frack! It is a three dog night out there and I've only got two. And they're small. And the fat, warm one smells. And looks like this:

As for pruning apple trees, it should be done while the trees are dormant. Before spring starts new growth, clip off all of the water sucker branches (tiny new growth) and look at the main branches. You want an odd number and strong branches. It's brutal, but cut out any lesser branch. Give the strong branch center stage. If any branches cross, choose one, and cut out the other.
Pruning Apple trees is not Democratic. In fact, it sounds repub. But you will have better trees, and a better yield.; January 17, 2008 at 8:23 PM
