National Day of Prayer....How's That Working?

The last eight years were the most prayerfyin' years in the history of the United States, or at least since the crackpots of the 1830's ran amok*. Yet, one would think that if praying for the United States had any efficacy, we'd be in a much different place today than where we are.

Unless of course Jesus thought the prayers of the last eight years were just kinda lame.

And he is punishing us.

*I seem to remember reading somewhere that in the early part of the nineteenth century people were particularly religious. But I'm too bored of the subject myself to google it, so if I'm wrong, suck it.

I pray you'll find Jesus. I heard he was missing.

Of course our prayers worked! God sent President Obama to deliver us from the cruel bondage of emperor Cheney, Didn't he? I'm just waiting for the 'turning water into wine' part. Or is that turning the 'waters into blood'? I can never remember that part... ;o)

Dr. Monkey Jesus has been found on my toast. My special Jesus image toaster has been a boon in these tough economic times. I sell 4 or 5 dozen one of a kind miracle Jesus toasts on e-bay a day!!!!

Dr. Z It is true that OUR prayers worked, but I doubt anybody at last year's national prayer breakfast was asking God for a black man with the middle name Hussein to save us!!

I guess God does have a sense of humor.

I pray that people stop wasting time praying. Amen.

After one of the hurricanes passed through, The Republican governor of this state asked for a day of prayer.

Potentially a good idea, but we needed far more than prayer alone to fix a multi-billion dollar problem.

Maybe Jesus can't handle the prayer volume. He should totally Twitter or Facebook instead.

"Jesus is watching over you... yes, even in the bathroom. LOL!"

One of the things that bothered me most about the last eight years was the co-opting of religion by the right-wing.
I'm pretty sure my God can kick their God's ass.

I always pray that the praying will stop because the longer it goes on, the more I feel like preying.

I actually found Jesus recently. And now he's in a deep freeze in my basement.

Seriously, though, I believe the Bush administration made baby Jesus cry so hard that the Father and the Holy Spirit had a hard time making out any of the prayers.

Bayard Rustin -- who was one of the masterminds behind Martin Luther King, Jr. and was later sidelined by the movement because of his sexual orientation -- was asked how he found the hope to go on after all that had happened ... to him, to the movement, etc. And he replied that you don't find hope, you MAKE hope.

Apply this as you will.
